DescriptionThe VCU Symphony, directed by Daniel Myssyk, performs an epic program of symphonic choral works. Joined by the VCU Commonwealth Singers (Rebecca Tyree, director) and augmented by the Williamsburg Choral Guild (Jay Beville, director), the Symphony will perform VCU student Allen Wittig?s "Crisis of a Country -- A U.S. Civil War Musical Retrospective".This 21-minute piece, narrated by American Civil War Center President Christy Coleman, encapsulates the events of the Civil War through the Battle of Gettysburg from the perspectives of the Union, the Confederacy, and the enslaved African-American population.

The concert will also feature Haydn's "Missa in Angustiis" (also known as the Lord Nelson Mass") and will feature the VCU Choral Arts Society (Rebecca Tyree, director) as well as soloists Lisa Edwards-Burrs, soprano; Robynne Redmon, mezzo-soprano; and James Smith-Parham, bass.

The program also includes Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije, whose colorful orchestration tells a humorous and satirical story based on his first effort at film music in the 1930s.
