The traveling exhibition, Funky Turns 40, was featured as part of the Black History Museum's opening in Richmond this past May and was on view throughout the summer. This exhibition commemorated the 40th anniversaries of 1970?s Saturday Morning cartoons that featured positive Black characters for the first time in television history and included 60 pieces of original animation cels and drawings from the Museum Of UnCut Funk. The curators of this exhibition, Pamela Thomas and Loreen Williamson, will be on VCU's campus on Tuesday, August 30th (3:00-4:30pm in the Student Commons Theater) to discuss the exhibition and topic. And Dr. Christopher Lehman, the Chair of Ethnic & Women's Studies at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, and the author of The Colored Cartoon, will join the conversation in order to provide an historical context and to emphasize the importance of this exhibition in the history of animation art.
In addition, a smaller panel exhibition of Funky Turns 40, highlighting the 20 "firsts," will be on view in the Fine Art Building Gallery, August 24 - September 11.
