April is National Oral Cancer Awareness Month. In observance of this month, VCU Dental Care will host FREE oral, head, and neck cancer screenings on Saturday, April 22nd from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Oral cancer affects approximately 45,750 Americans each year and is responsible for 8,000 deaths annually. The Oral Cancer Foundation reports that the death rate for oral cancer is greater than that of several other cancers such as cervical, testicular, thyroid and skin cancers. Higher death rates are associated with oral cancer because this cancer is often missed in early stages and is discovered at a very late stage. The common risk factors for oral cancer are tobacco use, excessive consumption of alcohol, and more recently, the human papilloma virus (HPV). In a significant number of cases, oral cancer is reported even in the absence of the above factors, likely due to a genetic predisposition towards it. A thorough periodic oral cancer examination by oral health experts can help detect cancer and pre-cancer stages in a timely fashion. Periodic oral cancer exam remains the best method of prevention of oral cancer. Remember that early detection can cure oral cancer and saves lives.
