Speaker:  Annette Oeser, MLAS, CCRP; Clinical/Translational Research Coordinator, III; Vanderbilt University Medical School

Ms. Oeser has worked in clinical research for over 30 years, primarily in PI initiated studies. She was certified CCRP in 2004 and has been a member of the Education Committee for the Greater Nashville Chapter of SOCRA since 2007, and currently serves as Co-Chair.  She obtained her Master of Liberal Arts and Sciences (MLAS) from Vanderbilt University in 2011, and is currently working on her Master degree in Bioethics and Health Policy at Loyola University Chicago.

Paying research participants, especially healthy volunteers, is common, but controversial. IRBs and research personnel worry about undue influence, but are payments kept so low that we are exploiting vulnerable populations? Do participants look at higher payments as "too good to pass up" or as a flag of increased risk?

Learning Objectives:  At the conclusion of this presentation, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe types of research payments
  • Discuss definitions of coercion and undue influence found in regulations and guidance
  • Discuss participant views of payment for research
